Halloween has already come and gone and we are smack-dab in the middle of PUMPKIN season! With Thanksgiving coming up, there's no reason your pup should have to miss out on all the delicious fun. Here is a recipe for a "pup"-kin pie dog treat with a peanut butter crust that your dog is sure to love!

Ingredients

Makes 21 "pup"-kin pie treats

2 eggs

4 cups whole wheat flour

1 cup canned pumpkin

1/2 cup oat flour OR rolled oats

2 tablespoons non-xylitol peanut butter

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1 cup water (more if needed)

Food coloring (red and yellow, pet safe)

Directions

  1. Mix all ingredients EXCEPT for food coloring together in a bowl.

  2. Remove 1/4 of the dough and set aside. This will be our "crusts" later.

  3. Add the food coloring to the remaining 3/4 of the dough and mix thoroughly. Add water or extra flour as needed to make the dough workable, but the dough should still be relatively dry (although when you go to cut it it will still be sticky!)

  4. Roll the colored dough out to 1/2 inch thick and, using a GREASED triangle cookie cutter, cut into "pie" slices. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

  5. Take your peanut butter "crust" dough, and divide into 21 pieces and roll each piece into a "snake" about as long as the widest part of your pie piece. Press this crust piece into your pumpkin triangle and decorate as desired! You can try different pie crust effects (pearled, pinched, etc.) or you can leave as is.

  6. Bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for 40-60 minutes until they are hard.

  7. Wait until the "pies" are completely cool and then serve to your pup! Optionally . . . you can top with a little spray whipped cream for the full pumpkin pie experience!

If you use a smaller cookie cutter, these will make a lot more treats! We made big biscuits large enough for a full grown Golden Retriever.

To store, simply store inside a gallon zip top bag on the counter for one to two weeks, in the fridge for up to a month, or in the freezer indefinitely. Make sure your pies are completely cool before storing.

If after all that, you decide you'd rather just buy dog treats with pumpkin and cinnamon in them, Blue Buffalo has a wonderful option for you!
